Semiconductor sales worldwide rose 1.7 percent from a year ago in August, an industry group said Monday.

The Semiconductor Industry Association said in a news release that sales reached $18.6 billion on the back of strong demand for cell phones, personal computers and other products that use chips.

For the first eight months of 2005, chip sales rose 5.8 percent from the same period a year ago to $144.4 billion, the SIA reported.
