Siemens has been selected to build a third-generation (3G) wireless network on Malta.
Vodafone Malta plans to make the Mediterranean island's first 3G network available to residential and business customers as well as visitors later this year. The service will include such 3G offerings as large-volume downloads and e-mail service on laptop and cell phones.
"We are opening up attractive 3G-based opportunities for our customers. Our objective is to be the first wireless operator to offer 3G/W-CDMA (Wideband Code Division Multiple Access) services in Malta," said Vodafone Malta Chief Technology Officer Joseph Muscat.
Siemens and Vodafone Malta have a prior history of wireless projects. Siemens constructed the company's current GSM network and will handle design, planning and installation on the 3G project.
