Atmel, Wavesat collaborate on WiMax PCI

Atmel and Wavesat said Tuesday they were working together in California to design a deployable WiMax Customer Premise Equipment that will cost under $100.

The collaboration is expected to produce mini-PCI module products that will be available this summer and will cost about 25 percent less than current WiMax CPE solutions.

The project is based on Wavesat basebands, interfaces and other components along with Atmel's MAX-Link 3.5 Gigahertz transceivers.

The components are streamlined such that they require fewer of their own parts and therefore can lower the overall materials cost for developers of WiMax products for mini-PCI components. Power consumption will also be about 30 percent lower than most current mini-PCI equipment, which is used to control peripherals linked to portable PCs.
