In Brief: Cup matches part of mobile TV field trials

A mobile television system developed by STMicroelectronics will undergo field trials in Germany during the World Cup soccer tournament that begins Friday.

The test involves the first European implementation of Terrestrial-Digital Multimedia Broadcasting (T-DMB), which brings data, radio and television signals into a vehicle-mounted receiver. The result: high-quality TV images of the World Cup available inside a vehicle.

The trial will involve broadcasting matches in a dozen German cities.

T-DMB employs a multimedia processor produced by ST that includes ultra-low power consumption and a digital rights management function. The T-DMB signal travels over a Digital Multimedia Broadcasting system that is already operational in much of Europe.
