Student ordered to destroy downloaded music files

(AP) -- A college student found guilty of copyright infringement has to destroy files he illegally downloaded years ago.

But a judge in Boston refused Monday to order Joel Tenenbaum, of Providence, R.I., to stop promoting such activity.

Tenenbaum has already been ordered to pay four $675,000 in damages for downloading and sharing songs online.

The recording companies claim Tenenbaum has been encouraging people to visit a Swedish Web site where they can illegally download the songs he was sued for sharing.

Judge Nancy Gertner says she does not have the desire or the authority to censor the Boston University grad student's public remarks regarding online file sharing.
