Mitsubishi recalls electric cars over brakes

Mitsubishi Motors Corp. is recalling about 14,800 electric cars globally because of faulty brake parts that could cause weak braking.

Mitsubishi spokesman Shigeru Jibiki said Thursday that the recall involves nearly 3,400 i-MiEV and 2,400 MINICAB-MiEV models in Japan, produced from July 2011 to October 2012.

Overseas, Mitsubishi is recalling about 9,000 i-MiEV vehicles, mostly in Europe, including those sold as PSA Peugeot Citroen's iOn and C-Zero. The number of the affected Peugeot Citroen models cannot be released under their contract, Jibiki said.

The faulty parts in the electric brake pump could make braking less effective, causing the car to take longer to stop. No accidents or injuries have been reported from the problem.
