Engineers call for national approach to flooding
An organization of civil engineers is calling for a national strategy for dealing with rising flood risks.
In a report released Monday during a workshop in Philadelphia, the American Society of Civil Engineers says that politicians have not fully heeded warnings about flood risks, including those driven home by Hurricane Katrina in 2005 and Superstorm Sandy in 2012.
The group calls for Congress and the Obama Administration to develop a sustainable way to pay for infrastructure maintenance and updates to help manage floods.
The group also calls for using nature as well as engineered solutions such as levees to help contain flood risks.
The engineers suggest the federal government team with other organizations to educate the public about flooding.
