A marine animal rescue group says an ailing gray seal pup has been rescued from a beach in New York.

A spokeswoman for the Riverhead Foundation for Marine Research and Preservation says the 1-month-old male was first seen Monday behind the Quantuck Beach Club in Hampton Bays.

On Tuesday, a foundation biologist and two interns determined the pup was lethargic and underweight, and they rescued it.

The animal is being treated at the foundation's Riverhead facility.

Spokeswoman Rachel Bosworth says there have been other seal pup sightings in Westhampton Beach, Southampton and Montauk. They appear to be in good condition.

She says the public should stay at least 150 feet from the federally protected animals. Human interaction can be harmful.
