A team of business analysts from the Yale School of Management, Rice University and the University of Toronto has found that switching how ratings are made for labor work done in people's homes can drastically reduce racial skewing.

In their study, in the journal Nature, the group analyzed thousands of assessments made by customers on an online rating platform, noting changes that came about after the method used to rate was changed. The research is also featured in a piece in the same journal.

Over the past several years, online rating platforms have become an important tool for consumers looking for products or contractors for services like lawn care or construction. Newer platforms have even begun to rate more specific work, such as the repair of a dishwasher or a heat pump.

In this new effort, the research team looked into complaints by civil rights groups that minority workers or groups are consistently rated lower than white workers, leading to fewer jobs offered and lower pay. The team's interest was further piqued when one of the happened to be speaking with a person who ran an online ratings platform for workers who perform home appliance repair. The platform operator reported that after changing from a five-star system on the platform to a thumbs up or down format, there seemed to be a reduction in the degree of racism.

The researchers analyzed data on the platform going back several years, which amounted to 70,000 ratings that had been made on the platform.

The researchers confirmed what the platform operator related—that there was clear evidence of incidences of racism in which minority workers were consistently given fewer stars than white workers. They also found that the operator had also been right about the changes after the system switched to one based on a simple thumbs-up or -down response—minority workers received the same percentage of upvotes as white workers, suggesting that the new system had removed the racial skewing.
