In many countries, there is an academic cheating crisis with students misusing artificial intelligence tools like ChatGPT to write essays, dissertations and other assignments. According to new research, certain personality traits make some students more likely to pass off AI-generated work as their own.

In a study in BMC Psychology, Jinyi Song of South Korea's Chodang University and Shuyan Liu of Baekseok University surveyed 504 Chinese art students. They found that students who scored highly for dark like narcissism, machiavellianism and psychopathy (collectively known as "the Dark Triad") were more likely to rely on AI tools like ChatGPT and Midjourney to do their work.

Although previous studies have revealed a link between dark personality traits and academic dishonesty, most research has focused on general student populations, not on specific groups such as art students.

Survey group

The researchers surveyed art students from six major universities in Sichuan because they face unique challenges, such as high expectations to produce original work, strong competition and the increasing use of AI in the creative industries.

Students filled out questionnaires about their personalities, how often they procrastinate, their experiences of academic anxiety, levels of frustration, negative thinking and AI usage habits. The researchers then analyzed the answers using a method called structural equation modeling to see how these factors are linked.

The results showed that students who exhibited higher rates of dark personality traits were much more likely to engage in academic misconduct, such as claiming AI-generated work as their own.

This group also reported higher levels of anxiety about their and were more likely to delay doing their work. This, in turn, increased feelings of frustration and negative thinking, which led to a greater reliance on artificial intelligence. The study also found that more materialistic students were more likely to use AI.

What can universities do?

The authors believe their insights make it clear that universities need to act.

"The findings highlight how personality traits are related to problematic academic behaviors and psychological difficulties," they wrote.

"Academic institutions should provide appropriate training and psychological support to counter academic dishonesty and ensure students understand the value of academic ethics."

Understanding how these traits and behaviors are linked could also help universities spot students who are more likely to misuse AI so they can offer them the right support sooner.

Next steps

While the study is valuable, it does have its limits. It only looked at art students in Sichuan and relied on self-reported answers, which can introduce bias. The study's design also did not prove a direct cause-and-effect link. Future research could follow students over time and include more disciplines to see how these relationships develop.
