Mobile-phone shipments up 25 percent

Global mobile-phone shipments reached a record 209 million during the third quarter of 2005 as industry prices continue to soften.

Strategy Analysts of Boston reported that the average selling price for phones fell 11 percent on an annual basis and is fueling shipments that will likely reach 800 million for the entire year.

"In stark contrast to the 25 percent upward growth in shipment volumes, global wholesale handset ASPs declined 11 percent year-over-year," said SA Analyst Neil Mawston. "These intense pricing and profit pressures within the mobile phone industry are going to cause consolidation-pressure to reach critical mass among smaller vendors."

Larger companies led the growth in shipments, with Motorola and Nokia leading the way in both shipments and market share.
