VoiceSignal announced the release Wednesday of a new speech interface system that allows continuous dictation of text messages for cell phones.
The VoiceMode 2.0 product is fully embedded in the phone rather than based on a server, which the New England company said can be hampered by network-related delays and drops.
VoiceMode 2.0 is designed for a wide range of limited-memory wireless phones and can be applied to e-mail and calendar functions as well as text messaging.
The unveiling came a day after another Boston-area company, Nuance Communications, announced in Las Vegas that it had developed an embedded continuous dictation solution for short-messaging systems called Dragon Mobile Dictation. Nuance said using Dragon was five times faster than writing a text message on a keyboard and doesn't require the speaker to pause between words so the system can keep up.
