Comcast settles data discrimination lawsuit

(AP) -- Comcast will pay up to $16 million to settle a class-action lawsuit accusing the cable TV operator of delaying certain Internet traffic.

The says delayed transfers of large data files by customers who use BitTorrent and similar file-sharing programs despite promising subscribers unfettered access to the Internet.

In August 2008, the Federal Communications Commission ordered Comcast to change the way it manages its Internet traffic, following an investigation by The Associated Press.

Comcast, which is the nation's largest Internet service provider, did not admit any wrongdoing in the settlement. A federal judge in Pennsylvania gave the settlement preliminary approval last week.
