Amazon unveils feature resembling Pinterest

Amazon.com Inc. has launched a Pinterest-like section on its website, something that could induce shoppers to buy more goods from the retail giant.

The company quietly unveiled Collections, which it calls a "test feature," where customers can add pictures or products from Amazon's vast catalogue to show off their style taste, the types of books they like, and the goods they hope to someday own. Shoppers can add to their Collections by clicking a plus symbol with the words "Add to Collection" below the picture of the item on the Amazon product page.

"This new test feature is just one of the many ways we are working to help our customers discover and share new things," an Amazon spokeswoman said.

Collections apparently isn't set up for every product, though. Many books on the site can be tagged for Collections. And several fashion items have the plus symbol as well. But electronics, such as the Bose SoundDock Series II, can't be added. Nor can many sporting goods items, such as the Lazer Genesis RD bicycle helmet.

Amazon has already set up a way for shoppers to pin items from its catalog on Pinterest, a site where people post pictures of products, people, pets and more. It has included a Pinterest icon, next to icons for Facebook and Twitter, which shoppers can use to share products. Those icons, though, are in a separate spot, on the right of the product page, just below the section where consumers click to buy goods.

Collections users also can connect with their friends to see what items they're posting.
