In an advancement for sustainable skincare, researchers at Guizhou University have reported a novel method to molecularly engineer lignin into a high-performance sunscreen ingredient. Lignin, a byproduct of paper-making and biorefining industries, has been traditionally underutilized, often discarded or burned due to its complex molecular structure.

However, this new study presents a green strategy to transform lignin into a valuable derivative with robust ultraviolet-absorbing and antioxidant properties. The research is in the Journal of Bioresources and Bioproducts.

The researchers used organocatalysis to engineer lignin into a lignin-3-(2-hydroxyphenyl)propionate ester (LPPE) derivative. This process involved a transesterification reaction between 3,4-dihydrocoumarin (DHC) and the aliphatic hydroxyls in lignin. The newly synthesized LPPE demonstrated a significant increase in phenolic hydroxyl groups, which are responsible for its enhanced UV-absorbing and antioxidant capabilities.

The study's findings indicated that the LPPE exhibited excellent ultraviolet-absorbing and antioxidant performance, with up to 90% free radical scavenging activity within 20 minutes using 5 mg/mL of LPPE. Moreover, when incorporated into cream at a 5% dosage, it achieved a high Sun Protection Factor (SPF) value of 40.9, underscoring its significant application potential in sunscreen products.

This research not only provides a for the valorization of lignin but also contributes to the development of eco-friendly and high-performance sunscreen ingredients. The use of biomass-derived materials in sunscreens could potentially replace synthetic UV-blocking ingredients, offering a healthier and more environmentally friendly option for consumers.

The study by Guizhou University represents a significant step forward in the utilization of lignin for high-value applications. The transformation of into a potent sunscreen ingredient could revolutionize the skincare industry by offering a natural and sustainable alternative to synthetic ingredients. Future research and in this area could pave the way for a new generation of eco-friendly sunscreen products.
