New clock generator for multiple chipsets
Cypress Semiconductor unveiled a Universal Clock Generator that supplies timing for multiple chipsets and next-generation processors.
The CY28551 is aimed at motherboard manufacturers who want to simplify inventory requirements and simplify short-notice design changes. It was developed by Cypress in conjunction with ASUSTeK Computer, a major motherboard manufacturer.
"We have seen convergence in clock architectures supporting multiple chipsets and platforms, driven by newer standards such as PCI Express," said ASUSTeK Vice President S.Y. Shian. "The Universal Clock is a versatile solution that leverages this trend, easing the process of board layout, termination and impedance matching over a variety of platforms."
Clocks are part of every chip that goes into a motherboard and govern the speeds at which data is processed within the computer.
Cypress said in a news release the generator works with chipsets from Intel, Silicon Integrated Systems and VIA, as well as the AMD K8 and Intel P4 next-generation processors. It is offered in 64 and 56-pin packages.
